VA - Bulayo: Guitar Songs from Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, and DR Congo

Release Date: 17/04/26

African acoustic guitar masterpieces expanding on Mississippi’s beloved "African Guitar Box." In 1979–1980, British-Kenyan musician John Low traveled across Kenya, Tanzania, Congo, and Zambia to learn fingerstyle guitar from heroes like Jean-Bosco Mwenda, Losta Abelo, and Emmanuel Mulemena, and to document under-recorded artists such as Francis Kitime and Mtonga Wanganangu. Recorded in homes, village squares, and watering holes, these intimate tapes capture virtuoso performances alongside ambient sounds. Some tracks appeared on John Storm Roberts’ out-of-print Original Music compilations, while others are previously unreleased. Restored and remastered from original tapes by Andrew Walter (Honest Jon’s, Abbey Road). Includes notes and lyrics by John Low and commentary by Tanzanian music scholar John Kitime. Licensed from John Low and the artists; pressed on high-quality vinyl at Chicago’s Smashed Plastic.
